Centering Talk in Kenya

In late December of 2006, just after Christmas I was traveling through Western Kenya with my overland group.  We spent the night in a campsite outside the town of Eldoret. It was a very rainy day while we were driving and likewise was raining when we arrived just at dusk. We setup our tents in the rain and dark but there were also a few rooms for rent.  My friends Dan and Heather ended up renting one of those rooms.

I don't remember the rotation of group duties that night though I remember that I was not involved in the cooking for the group. Rather, I had visited Dan and Heather in their room for a chat.  We had all been suffering through difficulties with our tour company and had many discussions over the previous weeks.  This evening we didn't talk about that though, at least not exclusively.

While we were talking we ended up talking about a number of topics, though I can't remember specifics.  What I do remember, even now 9 years later, is that during and after the talk how much more releived I felt having been able to talk to people more openly.  There were few secrets between members of the trip since we were together 24 hours a day for several months but when you could talk about things even contentious or frustrating things and come away releived it was definitely a very good thing.
